Madrid was part of my first ever solo trip! I would say Madrid is a good place for visiting museums and shopping, which is a bit of what every capital city usually has to offer:P. You can also make day trips, for instance to Toledo, Segovia, San Lorenzo de El Escorial, or Salamanca!

19 years old me here:PP

During the trip I learned that lunch is the most important dish of the day in Spain, usually, they eat 3 dishes (including appetizer and dessert) at 2-4 pm, and a late light dinner, after 9 pm is normal.

Things to do
  • Palacio de Cristal

  • El Retiro Park

  • Catedral de la Almudena

  • Royal Palace of Madrid

  • Temple of Debod

  • Plaza Mayor

  • Museo Nacional del Prado

  • Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía - take the glass elevator to the top for a view:))

  • Madrid Atocha Train Station if you want to see turtles.

  • Mercado de San Miguel

  • Eat Lunch at a local restaurant, normally they offer 3 portions as lunch is the main dish in Spain.

  • Daytrips to Toledo, Segovia, San Lorenzo de El Escorial or Salamanca!

Palacio de Cristal

El Retiro Park

A park to relax, maybe have a picnic or just walk through it. Palacio de Cristal is close to it.

Catedral de la Almudena

Just next to the Royal Palace of Madrid. I visited this place with a free walking tour.

Temple of Debod

It´s is an ancient Egyptian temple rebuilt in Madrid.

Plaza Mayor

Just a plaza (square) to pass through, but it´s a famous one. Before it was the center of old Madrid.

Museo Nacional del Prado

Very famous museum for its art collection!! I don´t know much about art, but it´s good to explore and learn more! There are certain artworks that you want to look out for and at some hours it´s free entrance fee!

Streets of Madrid - Randomly walking & exploring :))

Fun story: I actually made my first ever solo trip to Spain during my exchange in London (we had Easter break). It´s usually expected from London to rain a lot, however, I´ve never seen as much rain as I did in Madrid! It rained sooo much, my shoes got completely wet (just the day before my departure), and that´s where I learned that a hairdryer also can be used to dry other things, such as shoes..:PP

Madrid Atocha Train Station

Inside Madrid´s train station is actually pretty! U should go inside if u pass by it, you also find turtle inside! I went here after visiting Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía.

El Oso y el Madroño

Madrid's Official Symbol located in La Puerta del sol. It´s "Bear and the Strawberry tree". A strawberry tree has similar fruit as the strawberry we are used to, so it´s not the same one:))

Mercado de San Miguel

Paella ofc...

Here I visited a restaurant near Puerta del sol. Lunch is the main dish in Spain, so I ate appetizer and dessert before & after my paella. I remember having a hard time finishing all:P

Daytrip to Toledo

I went together with my hostel. Bring snacks ;)) a good way to meet other people :))

Accommodation

I stayed at Hostel One Madrid. It´s a small hostel, maybe for like 20 people in total? Therefore, it´s easy to make friends and they have free dinners every day! They also have activities and day trips, which I highly recommend!

There were some volunteers working there, which were very friendly! One of them joined me to museums and showed me around! Below is a picture of the activities the hostel offers;

Hostel one´s activities you can join!

Enjoy your trip! :*** I will always answer questions, so just let me know!
