I really wanted to visit Kraków to see Auschwitz. I didn´t know what else there was to see and do. I ended up loving the city. Here is all my advice on what to do and see, what to eat and where to stay!

I love Kraków because it´s a beautiful city to walk around. The main attractions are near each other and within walking distance. In particular, I loved those parks, such as Planty park, are suited in the center, so you will most likely walk through it while going toward the main attractions.

What to do
  • St. Florian's Gate.

  • St. Mary's Basilica.

  • The Cloth Hall - a market.

  • Planty Park.

  • Wawel Royal Castle and Wawel Cathedral.

  • Smocza Jama - a cave!!

  • Wawel Dragon - comes fire from it. Mainly for kids, but I loved it:PP it´s just outside the cave.

  • Free walking tour.

  • A Synagogue.

  • Daytrip to Auschwitz and Wieliczka Salt mine.

Below you can see from the pictures how I walked around the city :P

I started my exploration from St. Florian's Gate.

Walking towards the main square and St. Mary's Basilica..beautiful streets!

Here we have St. Mary's Basilica, which is located in the main square. The Cloth Hall Market is just the opposite.

Planty Park. A beautiful park while walking from the main square to Wawel Royal Castle. Love it!

Now I´ve reached to the Wawel Royal Castle and Wawel Cathedral. Beautiful combinations of style of buildings! I love the view just next to it too.

Don´t miss going to the cave, Smocza Jama! For me, it was so unexpected that there was a cave just next to the area of Wawel Royal Castle:P. When you reach outside the cave, you will find the dragon (see below).

Smok Wawelski Dragon. It comes out fire from the month:P I might have even found it more fascinating than the kids around lol.

Daytrip to Auschwitz

I went on a day trip to Auschwitz, which was organized by my hostel.

Food/restaurants

Raspberry Grandmother!! Eat Pierogies!

Pierogies are the must-try in Kraków. It´s a national Polish dish and could be filled with everything from meat to a sweet filling. I chose berries inside. I really liked the restaurant Raspberry Grandmother. It was cozy and had other Polish dishes as well. Soup is also very common here.

Accommodation

I stayed at Greg and Tom Hostel. It was very good!! Strongly recommend if you are coming to Kraków. It´s very affordable compared to other hostels in Europe, meanwhile, they have VERY good (and free) breakfast and dinner each day.

They also have activities organized, such as day trip to Auschwitz and Wieliczka Salt mine and 2 different walking tours. I strongly recommend joining as you learn more about the history of the city.

It´s good to know that it´s not a party hostel. They close the common areas at around 11 pm. If you like to go out, you could join the pub crawls of their other hostel called Greg and Tom Beerhouse. Or you just stay at their other hostel if you like night outs:P

Enjoy your trip! :*/Diana
